NEW DELHI: An earthquake of moderate intensity shook Assam and rest of the northeast today but there was no immediate report of any casualty or damage to properties.

The quake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale with epicentre in Tezpur district struck at 6.11pm, said R F Dattatreya of Met Department in Delhi.

He said the quake was of "moderate" intensity. Panic-stricken people ran out of their homes after the quake.

According to TV reports, tremors were felt for 10-15 seconds.

In September 2011, a 6.9-magnitude earthquake rocked northeast, killing eight people, including five who died in tremors that rocked neighbouring Nepal.
